After Celtic’s loss, Pep Guardiola discussed Kalvin Phillips’ future. Manchester City’s preseason in the US started poorly with a 4-3 loss to FC Rangers.
Celtic scored three goals in the first half, with Nicolas Kuhn netting twice and Kyogo Furuhashi adding another, leaving City trailing 3-1. Goals from Maximo Perrone and Erling Haaland leveled the score, but Luis Palma secured the win for Rangers.
Despite the off-season result, Guardiola will be disappointed. Kalvin Phillips, who spent last season on loan at West Ham United to regain form, also played.
His struggles continued, and he lacked confidence, similar to his performances for City. There are rumors of another loan move, with Everton and Fulham interested.
Guardiola commented on Phillips’ potential stay at City for the 2024-25 season, praising his training and first-half performance but acknowledging his recent injury.
Guardiola stated, “I have no idea what will happen. He knows the situation, and we’ll see.”
The Manchester Evening News reported Phillips had a tough game against Celtic, often “yards off the play.”
Based on this performance, Phillips’ future at City seems uncertain. Unlike Kevin De Bruyne, who Guardiola confirmed would stay, Phillips’ status remains unclear.
City will seek a favorable deal, but Phillips’ stay appears unlikely. We’ll see what unfolds.
