After Celtic’s loss, Pep Guardiola discussed Kalvin Phillips’ future. Following the pre-season defeat to Celtic, where City lost 4–3 to FC Rangers in the US, Guardiola addressed Phillips’ situation.
City fell behind 3-1 in the first half with goals from Nicolas Kuhn (two) and Kyogo Furuhashi.
They equalized through Maximo Perrone and Erling Haaland, but Luis Palma secured the win for Celtic. Despite the off-season result, Guardiola was undoubtedly displeased.
Kalvin Phillips, who also played in the match, was a topic of conversation post-game.
Many believe Phillips will depart this summer, especially after a lackluster loan spell at West Ham United last season, where he struggled to regain form and confidence.
Rumors suggest potential loans to Everton or interest from Fulham. However, Phillips remains with City for now, having played against Celtic. Guardiola commented on Phillips’ future, stating, “He trains really well and had a great first half.
We didn’t give him more minutes because he recently injured himself. As always, I have no idea what will happen. He knows what’s going on, and we’ll see.”
According to the Manchester Evening News, Phillips struggled against Celtic, occasionally being “yards off the play.” This performance doesn’t bode well for his staying at City through 2024–25.
While Guardiola confirmed Kevin De Bruyne’s stay, his ambiguity about Phillips suggests a likely departure. The priority is securing a favorable deal for City.
It appears Phillips is still unlikely to remain, but the situation remains fluid.
