Less than a year after leaving the Etihad Stadium, Ilkay Gundogan is set to return. The 33-year-old will sign a one-year contract with Manchester City, with an option for a one-year extension, as reported by The Athletic.
To facilitate the move, the former German international is willing to forgo the final two years of his salary that Barcelona would have owed him.
THE BIGGER PICTURE:
Last season, Gundogan featured in nearly 50 matches for Barcelona across all competitions and earned a spot in the La Liga Team of the Season.
However, with a new head coach appointed at Camp Nou, the veteran midfielder was informed that he is not part of Hansi Flick’s future plans.
Reportedly, Pep Guardiola spoke with Gundogan about returning to City and approved the move.
DID YOU KNOW?
Gundogan was Guardiola’s first signing as Manchester City manager in 2016. During his initial stint, the midfielder made 188 appearances and helped the team win five Premier League titles, two FA Cups, and a Champions League trophy over an impressive seven years.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR CITY?
The Premier League champions have had a relatively quiet summer. Gundogan will be their second senior signing, following Brazil’s Savinho.
However, their 2-0 victory over Chelsea on Sunday showed that they remain strong contenders for a record-tying fifth title. They are set to host Ipswich Town at home on Saturday.
