Arsenal and Chelsea are both reportedly interested in Aston Villa’s talented striker Ollie Watkins for the upcoming January transfer window.
The 27-year-old has garnered attention after an impressive 2022/23 Premier League season, where he scored 15 goals, helping Villa qualify for European football for the first time in over a decade.
Watkins has continued his strong form this season with one goal and two assists, prompting Aston Villa manager Unai Emery to express a desire to keep the England international at Villa Park long-term.
Emery recently confirmed that contract discussions with Watkins’ representatives are ongoing, stating, “I am working about it. We are in touch.”
Although Villa began negotiations with Watkins back in May, no agreement has been reached, sparking interest from several Premier League clubs.
Both Arsenal and Chelsea are reportedly preparing bids for Watkins in January, setting the stage for a potential rivalry between the two London clubs.
Aston Villa, however, is expected to be reluctant to sell, with Watkins previously valued at around £60 million.
Arsenal’s sporting director, Edu, is said to be in talks with Watkins’ agent, Paulo Vernazza, regarding a mid-season move to the Emirates.
While Arsenal may be leading the chase, Chelsea is also expected to compete for Watkins’ signature. AC Milan has additionally shown interest, looking for a successor to veteran striker Olivier Giroud.
Arsenal could benefit from Watkins’ goal-scoring abilities, as they have started the season strong but lack a high-scoring center-forward to solidify their title hopes.
Chelsea, meanwhile, has struggled under new manager Mauricio Pochettino, sitting 14th in the league with only five goals in six games. Watkins could bring the scoring consistency they need.
As January nears, Watkins’ future will likely hinge on whether Aston Villa can secure him with a new contract. If not, Arsenal and Chelsea are expected to pursue him aggressively, making him a highly sought-after player in the upcoming transfer window.
