Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was brought to tears after two players from the starting XI sustained injuries during today’s training session.

After Arsenal’s narrow 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United, Mikel Arteta spoke about his team’s frustration and their struggle to create decisive scoring opportunities.

In a closely fought match at St. James’ Park, Arsenal ultimately lost after Alexander Isak’s header secured victory for Newcastle.

Arteta acknowledged that his team’s attacking play lacked the sharpness needed to test Newcastle’s goalkeeper, Nick Pope.

“We are very frustrated and disappointed with the result,” Arteta admitted, explaining that Arsenal began the game strongly and initially controlled play. However, a single counter-attack left them trailing when Isak scored following a precise cross.

Arteta highlighted this as a turning point, noting that Newcastle gained momentum as Arsenal’s energy waned. “We got dragged into the game they wanted to play,” Arteta observed, crediting Newcastle for disrupting Arsenal’s rhythm.

He emphasized Arsenal’s need to be more clinical, lamenting missed opportunities at key moments. While they created some chances, Arteta felt that Arsenal’s finishing and delivery fell short of what was needed to break through Newcastle’s defense.

“When they’re ahead, they take a different approach, and we struggled to break them down,” he admitted, noting that their few clear chances did not result in goals.

Reflecting on the loss, Arteta acknowledged the challenge of moving forward. “Today, we have to swallow this result because losing in this league is always painful,” he said.

Despite his disappointment, he emphasized the need to refocus with another game soon approaching. “It’s tough to find the right words, but by Wednesday we have to be ready.”

The defeat underscored Martin Odegaard’s importance to Arsenal’s midfield. Since his ankle injury in September, his absence has been evident, as he remains one of the league’s top playmakers.

Arsenal maintained possession against Newcastle but lacked the creative edge Odegaard brings, which has become increasingly apparent with crucial matches, including one against Chelsea, on the horizon.

Arteta has been cautious with Odegaard’s recovery, yet his return could be crucial as Arsenal looks to strengthen their attack and keep their title hopes alive. Without him, Arsenal’s attacking fluidity suffers, posing a challenge to maintaining their ambitions.
