Mikel Arteta has shared that Arsenal are working on internal solutions to address Bukayo Saka’s absence while remaining open to a potential January transfer if an exceptional opportunity arises.
On Monday, Arteta confirmed that Saka will be out for several weeks due to a hamstring injury. He also noted that the team would have to manage without Raheem Sterling, who is sidelined with a knee problem.
Despite these setbacks, Arteta emphasized prioritizing the use of the current squad to maintain competitiveness.
He highlighted the availability of several in-house options but acknowledged the possibility of entering the transfer market if an extraordinary opportunity presents itself.
“We have many options within the squad,” he said. “But if something exceptional becomes available and the club is ready, we’ll consider it.”
Arsenal has a proven record of making impactful January signings, such as Jorginho and Leandro Trossard last season, and Martin Odegaard on loan in 2021, which positions them well to make smart moves if necessary.
Arteta also addressed the departure of sporting director Edu, who was instrumental in building the current squad. Jason Ayto has taken over as interim sporting director, and Arteta expressed confidence in the club’s ability to act decisively.
“The groundwork is complete, and we’re prepared if something happens,” Arteta said. “We didn’t foresee losing both Bukayo and Raheem at the same time. While we anticipated challenges, perhaps defensively, we are ready to adapt.”
In the meantime, Arteta is exploring tactical adjustments to cover Saka’s absence. During Arsenal’s 5-1 win against Crystal Palace, Gabriel Martinelli played on the right wing. Other options, including Ethan Nwaneri, Gabriel Jesus, Kai Havertz, and Leandro Trossard, are also being considered.
Arteta remains optimistic about finding creative solutions, saying, “I have ideas, but I want to discuss them with the players. This challenge is an opportunity for us to evolve and try something different.”
He also highlighted Arsenal’s resilience, recalling how the team has previously overcome injuries to key players like Martin Odegaard and several defenders. “We will continue to adapt and face this challenge with positive energy,” he concluded.
