Former Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Petit has urged Gabriel Martinelli to step up and demonstrate he belongs at a top club like Arsenal.
Speaking to Ladbrokes during the launch of “Gaffer of all Accas,” Petit expressed frustration with Martinelli, stating the Brazilian forward has yet to show the consistency needed to excel at an ambitious club.
Petit acknowledged Bukayo Saka’s absence as a significant blow for Arsenal but viewed it as an opportunity for others, including Martinelli, to take on greater responsibility. “Saka being out is a huge setback, but it’s a chance for players to step up,” he said.
While praising Martinelli’s recent performance against Crystal Palace, Petit criticized his lack of consistent impact.
He compared Martinelli’s development to Saka’s, highlighting how Saka has grown into one of the Premier League’s top players, while Martinelli still has room to improve.
Petit also emphasized the need for Arsenal to strengthen their squad in the upcoming transfer window. “They need fresh blood, new quality, and energy to compete at the highest level,” he stated, suggesting that Martinelli risks being replaced if he doesn’t rise to the challenge. “Would Martinelli make it into Liverpool’s team? No. Arsenal needs players of that caliber to compete.”
He criticized Arsenal’s dependence on a few key players and questioned whether players failing to meet the club’s high standards should have their contracts extended.
Petit urged Martinelli to take responsibility and seize the opportunity to prove his worth or risk Arsenal making tough decisions about his future.
While Petit acknowledged Martinelli’s potential and contributions, including his 15 goals in the 2022/23 season, he emphasized the need for more consistent performances.
“We’ve seen his quality in flashes, but it’s not enough,” Petit concluded, calling on the 23-year-old to rise to the occasion and secure his place at Arsenal.
